May 1, Labor Day and the Bavarian Championship
in Erlangen
Last weekend. in beautiful but cold and windy weather, the Bavarian
BMX Championship took place in Erlangen. Since it was our first
race of the season, the tension was high. Steffi's strongest
competitor, Nadja Pries, was on her home turf and had had some
training advantages, because the track in Garmisch had been
covered in snow for so long.
Nevertheless, Steffi won the first preliminary run after Nadja
made a mistake.
Thus, she won the second preliminary run confidently and without
mistakes by the competition. In the third preliminary Nadja
passed her at the last moment.
Now, everything depended on the last run.
Steffi took the lead right from the beginning and didn't give
it up again.
The consequence was the first great result of the season.
We drove home with the title of "Bavarian Champion"
and ready for next weekend in Esselbach.
In Stephan's group all of the 20 starters in the 20" division
were determined. He was put into an easy group for the preliminary
runs and didn't have a problem qualifying himself for the semifinal.
In the semifinal things got serious. You really had the feeling
that you were watching a little final. Stephan took the lead
immediately, jumped the big double and the step after it. He
was very lucky at this point. Due to his high speed, he almost
jumped too far and landed in the runout area.
The Final
Stephan started strongly from the 4th position, but the local
competition stayed close behind him. In the first turn he he
employed a fast and heavy tread and left his pursuers behind
a little bit. He jumped the big double and the step, too far
in the semis, but now in the final, perfectly. At this point
he was three bike lengths ahead of everyone else. On the last
turn he took a look back and downshifted a gear. When he crossed
the finish line, he was still three bike lengths ahead of second
place and became Bavarian Champion in the 20"division.
Cruiser - Race
There were only 5 starters in this group and they were mixed,
learner and youth.
Stephan had some problems in teh beginning because the brakes
on his cruiser had been adjusted. He said that the bike came
to a complete stop when he squeezed the brake just a tiny bit.
But he wouldn't be Stephan if he didn't rise above it. He confidently
took control over his opponents in the second run.
Since there were only 5 starters there were only 4 runs in this
group.
In the 4th run, which was also the final, his opponents wanted
to show him what was up and kicked it up a notch.
One of them even managed to fight for the lead for a short time,
but after a few fast treads everything was under control again.
And so, the victor in the cruiser division was also Stephan
Dorn.
Friendly greetings from Garmisch Partenkirchen
Günther Schneider and Ernst Dorn
