From April 30th to May 1st, a 13m/21km alleycat took place in
various cities worldwide. This happened for the first time in
2000 and the major award is a plane ticket for the male and
female winners east of Greenwich and those west of Greenwich,
to the courier world championship.
This year the course had the condition that it had to go by
the town hall, so that one doesn't have to start at the closest
hill top... there is a rumor that the best times are at under
25min, which is just unfair for us flat country couriers. We
started from a prolog by the town hall that led to the starting
area by the train yard in Wandsbek.
Then the wild race down the B75 began. Past the town hall, up
the street, then try to set off a traffic radar in the 30km/h
zone, but it didn't seem to be on. After a four way crossing
I was left a little behind... and cars are a little to high
for bunnyhops... so I had to sweat to keep up, but Kieler Street
(6 lanes in some parts) was just too tough - so I chose the
horrid bike path. At least that gave me the feeling that I was
riding cross country. Oh well, the typically rainy weather in
Hamburg had washed all the exhaust fumes out of the air.
And on my way north, we had to go up to the Volkspark Street,
the fastest ones already started coming towards me. Jens was
in first place in his Pirate outfit, followed closely by Michi
and the totally-hooded-man, he sped past me at high speed.
While passing a bus stop I came across a totally helpless and
lost guy from Berlin, which I piloted through the storm. The
finish line was at the - I don't want to bore you with more
street names, but it is world famous - Reeperbahn at the corner
of Zirkus Street. Here we found our dedicated organizer Tibor's
VW bus waiting, without him the race wiould never have taken
place in Hamburg. The bus was stuffed with prizes (unfortunately
not with beer).
Once again I was 1st place of all the women becasue I was the
only one, so I proceeded to drown out thie situation I was in
with beer. My white aluminum horse was chained up and patiently
waiting for me to wobble home on it. Even though we still have
about 150 bike couriers working, not a lot of people from Hamburg
showed up... but non- and ex-couriers can also take part in
the race and I have hope for next year. Girls...
