It was hot, very hot and the sun burned my salty skin. I have
never before looked death in the eye as clearly as I did last
weekend.....
Our prestige goal 2005 was scheduled for last Sunday for the
Dreisamtal Pirates.
The Black Forest Ultra Bike marathon is not only the biggest
marathon in Central Europe, it also passes right by our fromt
door.
Apart from that this marathon, a 50m/80km lap with 6890 vertical
ft/2100hm, is viewed as an internal "world championship"
by the locals!
And apart from that there were, once again, about 2200 participants
on the course.
The Pirate-South-Connection with Daniel Fach, Matthias Glaser
and Sönke Wegner was well trained and ready to go at 8am. Right
from the start we were able to move up to the front and so we
were spared from the mass crashes.
On the first 5.6m/9km uphill, a lead group of about 7 bikers
emerged. Following them were the pursuers with Sönke followed
closely by Matthias and Dan.
There was fighting, drinking and gorging.
But unfortunately the success of being among the top 10 remained
a pipe dream, because Sönke got a flat tire right before
the last ascent and fell slowly from 8th to 13th place.
