Sunday Sveny, as a single starter, and the Captain, on the relay
team with the Dolphins Angelika and Christoph Clausing, participated
in the 19th Bonn Triathlon under midsummer weather conditions.
They had to swim in the Rhein for 2.5m/4km, ride bikes for 37m/60km
and run for 9m/15km. Proving her initial doubts wrong Sveny
easily managed the 2.5m/4km in the river in 32min and could
then concentrate on the demanding bike course. Christoph started
8min later with the relay block and handed off to the Captain,
who was supposed to be the biker for the team. After about 18.6m/30km
he passed Sveny, he was ina hurry. Sveny got off her bike in
20th position and began running. She had the 4th best running
time out of all the women and so she was able to move up a few
places and ended up in 9th place overall of the women's division,
her time being 3:32:46h.
However, the Captain had not returned from the bike course.
After quite a while, in the chaos that ensued, the discovery
was made that about 2.5m/4km before the end of the course on
a fast descent of about 43.5mph/70km/h the Captain had badly
crashed, due to a negligent performance of a competition sheriff,
and had to be taken to the hospital via ambulance.
The question of guilt is still to be resolved. The Captain suffered
a variety of bruises, large surface abrasions and pulled muscles
in the back and neck area. He is out of the game for now, but
could luckily leave the hospital after being treated.
At the same event 3 of our replacement spinners also started.
Little Rene came in 78th overall after 3:22:11h, Holgi was in
140th place with a time of 3:31:50h and Harry finished after
3:33:05h in 150th place.
