Scooter holidays – Lanzarote

Did I already tell you during the one or another of my last bulletins about some suggestions for somenice scooter holidays? And so, Lars made his way….

At this time, he´s on Lanzerote and of course with his scooter in his luggage.
You can see and read his pictures and bulletins here…and maybe to get some wanderlust…

Prolog
The winter won´t stop here in good old Germany, its all wet, cold and un-comfortable and in my garden I also use to step in some snow.
What to do, to get some sunshine???  Well, I´m a Pirate, Pirates love the sea and of course islands...

Arrival, 19.03.2011
We got  24 degrees, and sunshine on Lanzerote
And much more, we got carnival on Lanzerote
Let me tell you, something more crazy than this, I haven´t seen before for a long time, some king of Christopher Strret Day and carnival in Rio together, and me??? Right in the middle….
I went there with my scooter and my Pirate-clothes. What a night, luckily I don´t have any pictures of it… J

Day 1, 20.03.2011
Collecting km´s, is what I want to do here, becasue I want to start in quite a good shape in the new season. So, I went on the first day from Playa Blanca, thru the wine-valley of La Geria to Yaiza and bac to Playa Blanca again. Altogether 85km´s and a riding time of 4:35h. I was all fucked up, but I wanted it like this.

Well, of course, during my rides, I´m enjoying the scenery, take a picture here or there and drink the one or another espresso or jump in the ocean. Altogether I was 7h away on the first day, with all the stuff I mentioned above…

Day 2, 21.03.2011
It was a marathon, I ended up at the hotel right on 42.2km and 2:24h. I rode from Playa Blanca to Yaiza, El Golfo and El Janubio. A real funny round course, almost flat, but the wind hurts L
Pirates belong to the waters and so did I in the afteroon…chilling…cheers….

Day  3, 22.03.2011
The day of the up and downhill parts, becasue Lanzerote is not flat, not like the Teide on Tenerife but a constant up and down. And constant uphill parts with 500m of altitude over 10km also made you fell, exhausted. I went from Punta Mujeres ( 0m above sea-level) up the Mirador del Rio ( 482m), you got a fantastic view from up there. Almost parallel to the coastline of the Famara-mountain, I rode to Haria and over Arrieta back to Punta Mujeres.
The downhill section is not very easy: easyily you reach 70 km/h and not forget the wind up there, whomjust come and go, like he wants to.
Well, at this point, I gotta say, a specia Pirate thank you to a pub in Haria, who gave me espresso and some cold beverages for nothing, when they realized I was up there with a scooter and not by bike. The waiter also wanted to ride  on my scooter, nd it almost ended up in a catastrophy for the waiter and my scooter…ZEIT, DISTANZ FEHLT

Day 4, 23.03.2011
The windy day, it wasn´t that warm, like the days before, only 20degrees, but very windy. I started up from San Bartolome towards Soo, than to  the windsurfer paradise La Caleta de Famara and over Teguise back to San Bartolome again. ( 41km and 2:02h).
It wasn´t that hilly like on the day before, but wind times two. ( for the guys, who started 2010 in Den Helder, it was like that). The flag would have torn and me almost as well, some of the downhill sections, I could only ride with the hands on the brakes, and once I thought about to get of my scooter and to push it.
For sure we´re doing a tough sport…
Well, Teguise was being robbed from Pirates very often in earlier days, today the Pirates came back, but luckily I was allowed to get away without being tortured or harmed. Lucky me…

Day 5, 24.03.2011
Yaiza – Timanfaya – Tinajo – La Geria – Yaiza – El Golfo – Yaiza (57 km / 2:47 h)
One of my beloved courses. Most of time you ride thru the fire mountains and the higher wine valley of the island. You could stop almost every 100m to take a picture. You don´t really feel the uphill parts, there was not much wind, almost a day like a dream. Well, I rode with my “ Black Pearl” ( Pirate-Alu-Kick-Bike), my tyres front and rear “ Schwalbe, Marathon Racer”. A good choice, some kind of sportive and you don´t  have to  relinquish of riding, comfortable.

Day 6, 25.03.2011
TheEasy-Day: Yaiza – Timanfaya – Tinajo – La Geria – Yaiza (36 km / 1:49 h)
What for a wonderful course, fantastic, like on the day before and in the afternoon I went to the beach and in the water. Lanzerote is the capitol island of the triathletes, inmay is the nest IronMan.Triathlon here and for all, the toughest in the world. All athletes are scared of the 180km bike course because of the heavy winds here and of course because of its hilly circumstances. Even now, in march, are lots of athletes here on this island, just to prepare themselves for this competition. It´s really exciting to talk to these guys. On the  whole island the cyclists swarming around – and everybody is faster than me.

Day 7, 26.03.2011
Highway to hell: Teguise – Mirador de Haría (602 m) – Haría – Mirador del Rio (482 m) – Orzola – Arrieta – Guatiza – Teguise (75 km / 3:30 h).
This round was like hard work to do, like a highway to hell: Coming from Teguise, it went uphill, almost for a whole hour, but arriving at the peak, you got almost the whole island under your feet. Down and up again, I really like it up, but down…well. If you leave all the mountains behing ya, than In Orzola begins an almost flat high speed course on sea-level for 20km heading south, its almost like riding at the shores of the Niederrhein, you are able to see in the morning, who will come to visit you in the evening.

Than from Guatiza you´re climbing back on 350m to your point of orgin. By the way, in Teguise, they got a museum just for or of Pirates, of course I visited it. ( @ Ron, I didn´t know anything about it, that your are running a museum as well....J )
I learned a lot there from my ancestors. I belief, I´m a really nice Pirate…

Day 8, 27.03.2011
Day off!!! Well, just of the cooter, okay, I did a little bit in the evening…
I really wanted to know, hoy a volcano look like from the inside, so I hiked uphill to the peak of the 458m high Caldera Blanca.
The cauldron of the volcano got a diameter of one kilometer and is one of the biggest on Lanzarote.

Day 9, 28.03.2011
The big south-loop: Playa Blanca – Yaiza – Timanfaya – Tinajo – La Santa – Sóo – Famara – Mozaga – La Geria – Yaiza – Playa Blanca (98 km / 4:46 h)
On the last day, getting complete hammered. I already saweverything, but not like this, in this combination. A wonderful round, changing all the time between sea-level and 300m, volcano-scenery, winegrowing, beach, wind and sand…Awesome!
If I would be a Pirate from the older days, I´ll would have raid this island all over again...
Maybe later … ;->>>
