Last Sunday, the team PIRATES of Vancouver sponsored by the
Hamburg team of the same name created some excitement in the
Canadian triathlon scene.
In a select starter field at the Squamish Triathlon, including
big names like Peter Reid (3x winner on Hawaii), the two athletes
Florian Vogt and Matthias Finke made an impression at the
race with their personal best times.
According to Vogt, their strategy was to hold back during
the swim, so they wouldn't have all their cards showing up
front. In the second third of the race, the bike ride, the
time had come. Especially the training camp in Germany in
May had been effective for Finke and he moved far up in the
ranks on his bike.
Vogt performed a hussar ride on his bike that searches its
equal. Apparently, the switch to a new tire sponsor quickened
Vogt, who hails from Hamburg, so that he was able to improve
very much on his performance on the machine specially constructed
for himself. He was also able to show his great running potential
on the last leg of the race and sent his opponents to the
back of the ranks. Cheered on by the fair spectators, Finke
was able to move up to 3rd place in the AgeGrouper ranking,
which was won by the local matador and multiple winner on
Hawaii Peter Reid.
Vogt, Reid & Finke ;)
Once they crossed the finish line, both athletes showed themselves
to be very satisfied with the results and announced that they
would be back next year with an expanded team PIRATES of Vancouver.
Good luck to the buccaneers!
