April 1st 2007 - the date that had popped into my head during
the passed 3 months every time that laziness reigned and the
inner temptation was to lay on the couch.
Suddenly it had come: THE DAY X-Freiburg Marathon 2007.
The preparations went as planned and so I made my way to Freiburg
highly motivated.
A week beforehand, the starting time had been moved 15min back
to 11:20am, since the Palm Sunday procession, as well as the
marathon, would be going through the city.
The marathon was almost two identical laps, while the half marathon
was one.
For starters: the start of the half marathon stayed as scheduled
at 1:05pm… crazy, when suddenly 8000 more runners are on the
track on you run right into them…
But first, the start: totally concentrated with my competition
poker face, I was off…
staying amongst the crowd, running through Freiburg in a world-class
atmosphere...
....and the odd fellow runners...
The first lap went by quickly, but then the actually avoidable
happened: a wall of 8000 half marathon runners, which meant
a "traffic jam" on the track! Somehow I got through it, ran
as if being chased to make up for lost time and this is what
almost came back to bite me in the ass… but only almost.
I finished after 3:49h and was pretty beat. Afterwards, I was
off to the hotel, took a hot shower, put up my legs - good thing
my personal supervisor was at my beckon call - a great big thank
you to Jess at this point!
I was already able to laugh again the next day and enjoy myself
on an extended shopping tour through Freiburg.
I already looking forward to next time and the coming season
on the Pirate
