"Blutsventje News Part 2"
How I found my new princess at "Biking under the Half Moon": our group of ten, including Katrin Schwing, Tanja Wittig, Matthias Ball and my own heartbreaking bloodthirstiness began our season finale in Side on the Turkish Rivera. Besides the many biking miles, there were also many social events.....

End-Of-Season Collective Report...
You have to believe me, even without photographic evidence, that Biebergrund 2006 a mud-festival of epic proportions, really happened. 75m/120km on moist ground in constant rain. I have to say though that after a while, the mud kinda grows on you.

Hola kollegas de biciclettas,
It's been a long time since there has been any news from Bonsai, but here's a whole load of it! Thanks to the god of weather, who bestowed a few more summery days on us, we had two more riding technique courses in the Nürnberg Steinbrüchlein. While a "classic" course for Abby-Average-Biker was scheduled for SA, we got hardcore on SU and tips and tricks were given for riding in sections, back tire jumping/shifting and Northshore trials for fun, to all those interested in riding trials…

20 Years of Pirate Party WE in Bad Hamburg on the Elbe
On the 14th, a hardcore family get-together Pirate style took place in Hamburg by the Elbe Auen. Pirates swarmed there from the whole republic and even from far away Toulouse… and Cape Town to take part in the excellent festivities.

On October 7th 2006, the 7th run of the GPBA took place within the framework of the Freestyle Show of MC Lübtheen. The highlight was the floodlit finale.
There were 28 starters. There were 3 preliminaries. The 28 riders were divided into 2 groups. The first 4 bikers out of every group were directly qualified for the final.

Take your helmet off for prayer....
aka: Langenberg Marathon 2006. So, the time had come again, after Plettenberg a few weeks ago, to tackle the Langenberg Marathon. I left Moers shortly before 7am and made my way to the Sauerland. Once I got their, I went to where they were handing out the starting numbers, then to change and warm up. Unfortunately, the warm up ride was quickly interrupted , when the front V-brake jammed and blocked the front wheel.

Report on the Black-Forest-Bike-Marathon on 09/10/2006
During the 10th edition of the Bike-Marathon all the starters were exceptionally honored with perfect weather conditions, which are an absolute rarity in Furtwangen. That's how 430 other bikers and I felt at 9:15am on the 37m/60km marathon that was quite technically challenging.

20 Years of Piratism
Hey Pirate community, on October 14th there's gonna be a huge party in Hamburg for our 20th anniversary. For our followers of the mountain bike scene, we will also be offering a comfortable 2-3 hour tour over the Hamburger Rockies with me at 1pm (BE SURE to sign up for this beforehand). On August 26th, the starting shot was fired under good conditions at 8am, for the 12 hour ride in Todtnauberg. This is my home race, where three others (that unfortunately aren't exactly part of the elite) and myself form a team of 4.

Tutzing
456 triathletes met last Sunday at 8am for the popular Tutzinger Triathlon. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't quite as nice and summery as it had been on Saturday. After swimming 1312yds/1200m in the Starnberger Lake, which was quite cold, I got on my bike for the challenging 32m/52km lap around the entire lake.

On July 8th I took part in my first triathlon

My first triathlon
of the year was in the Thülsfelder dam (1-42-10). The water temperature of 66°F/19°C, sunshine and a little wind made good conditions for some masochistic torture. And, like so often, at 8am the world was fine.

UEC Masters European Championship 2006 Graz (Statteg)
This track did a European Championship more than justice. 52m/84km and 10712 vertical ft/3265hm, steep ascents and hardcore descents and a "PIRATE" in the middle of it, who was able to keep up with his age division pretty well, considering that this race was for elite bikers.

Hey everyone,
on Saturday a large number of Plettenberg Sauerland-Pirates were deployed for hardcore racing in Nordenau once again. On the technically and scenically second best MTB track in the Sauerland (Plettenberg is no. 1, of course.), the "Young Pirate" Marc Johannes)accomplished a sensation.

July 29/30 GPBA Run in the MotoX Park Oststeinbek.
On Saturday July 29th 2006, 11 bikers made their way to Hamburg. At 1:30pm on the nose the first preliminary began at the same time as the apocalyptic rain. Various nautical passages of at least 12in/30cm in depth, made things harder on man and machine. The Pirate boss was happy and did a rain dance to keep it from drying up again. He even had the new Pirate umbrellas with him for a fair price.

Premiere for a Pirate - or what a runner, a mountain biker and a canoeist have in common
On Saturday July 22nd 2006, the Canoe-Triathlon took place, as it does every year, in my hometown Kelheim (located in the lovely Danube valley Altmühl). This race is organized by the local canoeing club with the intent of joining three different sports, that are usually hard to combine, together into one competition.

June presented itself in its diversity...
After another fun filled bike-festival-weekend in Willingen (with the obligatory sniffles arriving afterwards) and my capacity as organizer at the ultra triathlon in Moosburg, I made my way to Ischgl, in order to be present at the Feel your Bike season opening with a trial show and a bike simulator.

Bilstein 2006
I was registered for the third time, but whether or not I would compete there for the first time still remained to be seen... (the last two times I was "suddenly" pregnant ;-) and then the year after I was totally stressed out with the baby), because the rear brake was hardly budging, after I I got the bike out of the trunk. Luckily, our master mechanic Jürgen was with us and after a lot of swearing and some choking it worked fine again.

Biesenrode on June 18, 2006
The weather was dreamy and the race was a real challenge. This track wasn't easy to ride, but it still worked out for me pretty well. It's kind of unfortunate that some organizers have no idea about racing and that they've probably never sat on a mountain bike before in their lives. That would be the only way to explain the fact that the only seniors' division began at 30 years of age and that was that.

5th run for the German Motocross Trophy in Reil
In sweltering heat, in the Mosel Valley, in between the vineyards, the 5th run for the German Motocross Trophy took place last weekend. Aside from the trophy riders, a few riders from the German Automobile Association (DAM) participated as well and so 24 teams showed up to the mandatory training to compete for the positioning. We only made 12th place, due to a problem with the carburator, where the motorcycle would turn off during the fast laps.

July 15th, Bad Goisern !!
On July 15th in Bad Goisern everything will be about the Salzkammergut Mountainbike Trophy, which will be handed over for the ninth time. The longest track for the trophy is 126m/203km long and has a craziness of 22965 vertical ft/7000hm. The drop out quota is betwenn 30 and 50 percent, which earns the race the respect of hardened adrenaline junkies such as Wolfgang Fasching or Stefan Danowski.

Allersheim MTB-Cup
Finally, I had an almost-home-game, at the Allersheim MTB-Cup on July 2nd, so I spent a week training in my old home the Weserbergland, which would come to an end with the race. The rides during the training were a lot of fun, finally I was alone in the forest again (that isn't really an option in my current home of Stuttgart, also I was allowed to ride paths that were less than 6.5ft/2m wide ;-)). I registered for the short distance; 15.5m/25km and about 1968 vertical ft/600hm.

On Sunday June 18th, I stood at the starting line of the 8th Rheingauer MTB Marathon, in the new daring BSN-PIRATE outfit for the first time. Hot ride through the Black Forest
The Black-Forest-Ultra-Bike-Marathon on June 18 2006 in Kirchzarten: early in the morning, at 8:15am the starting shot was fired for the 48m/77km lap right through the Black Forest, in awesome weather. The first 6m/10km went pretty smoothly and I tried to make my way to the front of the leading group, which was pretty hard considering the number of licensed riders.

The Lucky, Pink Jersey
After having to scrape the ice off of the speedometer last week in Willingen, the Würzburg-Marathon promised summerly weather. Obviously, our nifty, new, discreetly pink summer outfit had to be tested! Oh well, in one ear and out the other and I bravely made my way to the starting line!

The first two triathlons - olympic distance in Harsewinkel and middle distance in Bocholt! And Sveny of the Pirate triathlon team was doin' good! Sveny began the triathlon season on May 28th in Harsewinkel. An olympic distance consisting of a .6m/1km swim, a 25m/40km bike ride and a 6m/10km run, was the plan. Unfortunately there aren't any pictures, but there are awesome results. 6th place overall out of the women and 3rd in her age division!

One could say it goes: hot, hotter, Bispingen.
Okay, let's begin with Saturday.
First, I started riding on the track that I hate on the 20" kiddie-bike. However, during training, I noticed that I was sweating like crazy and I had to give my Pirate pants into expert hands, to take out the inner lining (oops, old model).

Waldhaus-Fun-Bike-Marathon on June 11 2006 (or should I say Waldhaus-Fun-Bike-XC-Race!?)

In the beginning I did well and after 12m/20km, I was riding in the second group that included places 15 through 25. That was enough. We all worked together and the distance between us and the front got smaller and smaller.

Radiation victims in Gorleben....
The month of May began with a duathlon, where racing is concerned. On May 7th, I made my way to Gatow near Lüchow/Dannenberg, where I took on the distance of a 3m/5km run, a 18m/30km bike ride and another 3m/5km run. Motivated by the neighboring village Gorleben (not a joke), I began to radiate after the first run.

Duathlon in Greven
On Saturday, I participated in the duathlon in Greven. 2.2m/3,5km run, 12m/20km bike ride and then another 2.2m/3,5km run. A circular course with 328ft/100m of cobblestone had to be run/ridden around 12 times. A crazy downpour on the 4th bike lap and a lot of narrow turns. Out of about 100 starters, I came in 17th overall and 5th in age division 40.

Heidesee-Triathlon in Forst, 05/22/2006
Finally the time had come: my first triathlon of the year! The Heidesee Triathlon is the highlight of the beginning of the season every year and is also the first triathlon in the year to have an outside swim in Baden-Württemberg. Last weekend. in beautiful but cold and windy weather, the Bavarian BMX Championship took place in Erlangen. Since it was our first race of the season, the tension was high. Sprint-Triathlon in Munich
The swimming took place in the Olympia pool, 1312ft/400m, in 10sec intervals.
Maybe that's why there weren't any slipstream issues during the 12m/20km bike ride that followed and which consisted of 4 laps around the Olympia Park.

CAPE EPIC
(April 22-29) in South Africa with RAF-Andreas and Frogeater-Thomas with the goal of riding 572m/921km and 54478 vertical ft/16605hm in 8 stages, in 8 days.

Fast weekend...
...having just gotten back from Italia, Sveny and Captain Klotz of the Pirate triathlon team, ran in 3 top rankings within 3 days... kinda crazy - huh??!!! Sveny and Jörn

May 2006

Hey landlubbers,
at the Bike-Marathon Garda Trentino the Ronda Granda and Extrema went through 2in/5cm fresh snow. I was spared that and was allowed to make my way down the descents, with freezing feet at a temperature of 39°F/4° and fight my way into 16th place at the Ronda Piccola...

Pirate triathlon team training camp the 3rd
After Nina and Gregor (January), Thomas (March), and Sabrina and Rainer (March too) entered Mallorca in order to train, Sveny and Jörn of the Pirate triathlon team were finally also off to bike and train, for 10 days in bella Italia…

Last Sunday at the Hermanns Run
From the Hermanns Monument in Detmold to Bielefeld to the Sparren Castle. This race is hardcore with 19m/31km and 1968.5 vertical ft/600hm. Additionally there are 128 steps at mile 13/km 21. It went well. I don't have the exact results yet. The time was 2:57h. I took on the role of the "bunny" for an aquaintance during this race and pulled her under 3h.

Pirate spawn on the podium
The time was right... the two blondes could not be dissuaded; they wanted to go out to sea.... Captain Stedebeker had no choice but let his pirate daughter Désiré (10 years old) and his godchild Maleen (11 years old) loose on the racing world in Sundern at the Megasport Mountainbike in their Pirate outfits. The comment that Captain Stedebeker was more nervous as a coach than he ever was at his own races, is superfluous......

April 2006

Hola, hola,
after a start into the biking season that was so-so, due to the weather, we took our bikes on an Easter Bunny hunt on April 15th! ... first, a four hour long martyrdaom had to be absolved, in the form of a ride technique course. 5 people, who were undaunted by death made their way there. Some of them had been there before (record for Ralph: 4x, Gabi: 2x) and with "Forest Master" Tanja Wittig an XC racer was among the group. Unfortunately, two people had to move their appointments to the next time... that was the starting formation.

April 2006

On Sunday April 23, the time had finally come.
The duathlon season of 2006 began for me with the Powerman-Holland. This race was also evaluated as a Powerman European Championship.
While any soccer fan has to wash his mouth out with soap at the mention of the word Holland, I can merely out myself as a Holland and also Belgium fan. The starting shot was fired promptly at noon. For 250 athletes this meant running for 9.3m/15km, cycling for 37m/60km and then running again for 4.6m/7,5km (or as the Dutch would say:Loopen - Fietsen - Loopen).

April 2006

Hi Ho
Finally, it has warmed up and we can get out of those smelly gyms! Said and done: we went to the 2die4 Cup in Solms witha new team formation, so that we could get the new team accustomed to each other, have fun and get used to the great, wide (infinite?! oO ) outdoor fields in the open air again.

April 2006

On April 15 2006 the time had finally come.
The weather god was totally on our side. Radiant sunshine, 57°F/14°C, a slight easterly wind. 19 riders found their way to Harry Kloss' automobile recycling yard in Osteinbek. Two 1.5 hour enduros were on our GPBA motto plan. This time some parts of the track seemed like an Enduro World Championship for Big Bikes. (Marco's version of the article about Easter Saturday.)

Suzuki NIGHT of the JUMPs / IFMXF FIM World Championship Bremen, April 1/2 2006
The weekend in Bremen went quite well for me. Since it was a "Suzuki NIGHT of the JUMPs / IFMXF FIM World Championship" event, there were no prequalification rounds. So, I had to be content with participating in the "Highest Air-Contest".

April 2006

On the Saturday of Easter weekend, not only the bonfires were burning...
Harry Closs' pitbike track in Osteinbeck by Hamburg was also on fire.
Once again, our team rider Georg made a good impression!

Blue sky and sunshine at a temperature of 46°F/8°C in the Sauerland,
the perfect weather for a marathon. So, on March 18th, I sailed to the land of the bent power poles for the 25th Steinfurt Marathon, in a good mood.

Hola, landlubbers,
here is the whole truth, the whole and entire truth, the whole, entire and complete truth, no euphemisms, makeup or abridgement of data: overall results for the OPEN MTB-Marathon Gran Canaria, short distance:

March 2006

Hola everyone,
I'm back in the country and slowly but surely the sun is coming out again, even in Germany - yipeeeeeee!! But LaPalma was pretty sweet too at 77-86°F/25-30°, with a view from the terrace of the nearby ocean. Single trails in the sunshine, black beaches and a new jump slope that was built by downhill-cannon Daniel Schäfer and others.

March 2006

Hola landlubbers,
After the first part oft the PIRATE Bikeweek La Palm/Gran Canaria our adventure in island hopping began with a captured Binter-Canarias machine on rollercoaster course over the open sea to Gran Canaria… Once we arrived, my bride "Terrace-Philipp" and I were immediately kidnapped by the marathon organizer Petra Wonisch and taken to the "Sun-Radio" studio, where we gave our first live-radio interview… bla, bla, bla, hardcore gravel track, a lot of Bitter Lemon and we shall see who can keep his nose out front….

March 2006

Relay - Gold in Zons ….
…huh, where the heck is that…??? ...and it wasn't just in Zons that we got the gold…! Svenja and Jörn of the Pirate Triathlon Team also won in the mixed division of the relay marathon in Pulheim! Jörn

"Night of the Jumps" in Mannheim
Of the four ramps that we had at our disposal, two stood at 66ft/20m (26ft/8m radius), a 30ft/9m radius ramp at 72ft/22m and the kicker with the funbox in front of it stood st 36ft/11m or so. The start-up and breaked run were typically not exactly overly proportionally designed, but didn't prove a problem. Florian

February 2006

Fuerte Bike Marathon - it's time to tango, muchachos - it's payday!
Actually, Captain Aalbörner had already taken his seat on the Pirate afterdeck with his age division, in order to behold the evening sun over all his successful raids, while drinking red, 1489er Tortuga wine with a milkmaid with 34 DD cast-bronze. Actually, until top buccaneer Ron sent a dead carrier pigeon to Hannover by catapult……………

Pirates on snow - or… the seven dwarves found their Snow White….
Once again the Sauerland Pirates went skiing in the small, introspective village of Jerzens in Pitz valley, in order to balance the disharmony of the musculature… Had I known before what all would happen, I would have sold the tv rights to a daily soap. I'm sure the ratings would have killed.

February 2006

Training camp 06, Volume 1
When the weather here got really down and dirty, we decided, "We're outta here!" Our goal: Playa de Palma. And when people in Germany were jittering at below freezing temperatures, we had the best weather and a temperature of 64 deg. F/18 deg. C. Gregor

January 2006

The fear of Don Karrasch and the black gang, …….
Unfortunately, why unfortunately?? complete fear, pure heart pounding in the pants of the islanders lead to the change in the date for the marathon in Fuerteventura, from 02/25 to 02/18/06. Don Karrasch has been the victor of this event twice already, the other victors in all these years also didn't have Spanish names, which lead to the sneaky tactic about the date!!

January 2006

Bikeklau in Saxony....
At this time a series of thefts has been taking place in Saxony that screams to high heaven, so we put a campaign into action. We were victims ourselves at the beginning of December (5 crossers). Furthermore, 3 other crossers were also stolen in December, that I know of. In January (which is only half over…) 7!!! Crossers (worth over 33000,-€).

January 2006

New Years may be over, but……….......,
we're going to the biggest New Years run in Europe and it's taking place right in front of my door. So strap on your wooden legs, take off your eye patches and let's go. Bernd

Hola landlubbers,
those of you who think that Pirates are easily identified by their peg legs, the hooks on their hands or their eye patches are mistaken.
