Hours of Motion
Cycling4Friends let 200 cyclists pedal for a good cause. A colorful field of over 200 bikers neared from across the plain of the mountain track. Upon demand, we all rose from our saddles and pedaled up the steep incline standing. The lineup of the Tour de France seemed to have met early, on November 3, 2007 in Viernheim, to do a dry run of the leg to Alpe d'Huez.

Cross Race in Vechta
I was also present at the D-Cup final in Vechta on December 30, 2007. After not being able to train for over a week, due to a cold, my self-confidence wasn't exactly high. I basically slept through the start and ended up riding up the hill with 79 others.

German Cup in Herfort
The last race of the German Cup was in Vechta and the winning streak continues. Just as in Harburg, Robert's fiercest competition was the man in the red and black jersey. However, he was not quite able to stick to Robert's rear wheel on the last lap. And so, Robert secured 1st place in the last run of the German Cup and overall. After proving himself the most constant cross-granddad in Germany, he plans on closing the book on January 5th, at 10am in Herford, and take the title.

German Cup in Hamburg
Traditionally the community of the "Dirty Tires" gather in the hills of Harburg, on the 2nd day of Christmas, to watch the Christmas Cross… or even take part in it. I recall that in ancient times even mountain bikes were authorized, but since the big guys constantly strive to limit athletic activity to their own restricted group, as much as possible, even the "Hobby Crossers" were excluded this year.

Rowdy Christmas ("Bagalutenwiehnacht") 2007
On December 21st, the hour was at hand. :) In order to develop a solid basis, we invaded our usual Chinese place and helped ourselves to the necessary basic foods. Afterwards, 8 Pirates were of to the Alsterdorf Gymnasium.

Cross Race in Bad Bevensen
Last Sunday we were off to the 5th run of the Stevens- Cyclo-Cross-Cup in Bad Bevensen. Fun stuff, when it's below freezing. The track was 2.17m/3,5km long and pretty flat. About 20 bikers started the race at 11am. I don't know if it was because of the weather, but they all rode off, like there was no 2nd lap.

Hello friends,
a collaboration between the Recklinghausen cult band "Captain Twang and His Rhythm Cat" and the video artist Ulle Bowski (the film "The Deal", WDR, kult a), has resulted in a video clip. In it, an old man drives through the lit night of Recklinghausen. Twangy hillbilly guitars resound and psychedelic lighting effects freshen up the tired plot. You can find the clip on the Recklinghausen rock duo's myspace page.

Every year, the international cross elite meets up at the Bornheimer slope in Frankfurt. Of course, I had to be there. Suffering from a slight sniffle, I was the first to choose a starting position.

Bike Cross in Hummelsbüttel

Unfortunately we have to take a break for the winter right now and I'm still athletically inactive, due to my outstanding injuries. In exchange, I received the "Jinx Platter 2008" at the Christmas party, for my accident.

Bike cross in Grevesmühlen ...
on Sunday, the 25th of November, we were off to the 3rd run of the Stevens Cyclocross-Cup, to gather points for the overall ranking. Robert was able to secure a solid victory amongst the seniors and top the 2nd place he had finished in the day before.

WinterFreeRide in Oststeinbek
Marco and Maraike of the GPBA team called us to the Winter Free Ride in Hamburg Oststeinbek. 22 bikers answered. In beautifully sunny, 35F/2C degree weather, Saturday was a success. And that's the way it should be! We were especially happy to see so many veterans attending, but a few rookies came too.

Bikers gone astray
At the end of April, after it was announced that my hometown race, which is also my favorite, would not be taking place, I thought to myself: if not the P-Weg in Plettenberg in the fall, then at least a marathon in New York City in November.

Sandy Scott:

Ironman Canada
Blutsventje News, live from Gran Canaria
Hola landlubbers, thank god it's a school day, umm, day of rest… because the first 3 of the MTB-Training Tour Days were pretty tough: on the northern side of the wild island of Gran Canaria, we left our residence, Petra Wonisch's "Villa del Monte," canary-bike.com, and rode mile after mile towards the sky, in wonderful "hiking weather."

A Brief Introduction:
On a quickly resume, I was a three event national running champion in my youth (5K track, 10K cross country, and member of national championship winning relay team). I came to cycling very late in life at the age of 64, but as you can see from the picture "winner20K" I'm not exactly the typical 67 year old. With just 11 months of cycling total, I broke the Florida State 5K time trial record. I have notched victories against 4 national champions and one world champion, and I am the current USCF state road race and time trial champion here in Florida and also the current Florida Senior Games state time trial and road race champion.

Mountain Race Neckargemünd on November 3rd, 2007
The Mountain Race track went from Neckargemünd, at 420ft/128m, for 7.3m/11,8km up to the Königstuhl ("king's seat"), at 1864ft/568m. The first mile and a half made up the steepest passage, after which the incline was easily managed on the large bit. I started from the front line and was able to take the lead immediately. At least for the first ascent.

ENTEGA City Cross Cup Lorsch on November 4th, 2007
It was my first cross race on my mountain bike in the everyman division. Having registered late, I found myself in the unfamiliar last row of starters. Madness… but then we were off and I sped after the c. 35 other bikers. The 0.8m/1,4km lap through garden plots, over two hurdles, up and down steps and over cobblestones (start and finish) took us around the monastery in the historical city center of Lorsch. After four fun-filled laps, I finished in 14th place after 21:44min, with a lag of 01:29min.

A Brief Introduction:
My name is Oliver Preisser and kiting is my greatest passion. Being a very good skier, I was looking for a new challenge at the end of 2005. Going downhill had become too boring for me. By chance, I discovered the nearby seamount Snowkitespot. I was there the following weekend and immediately got hooked. Without further ado, I signed up for a Snowkite Race Workshop, conducted by my Swiss "foster father" Ivo Bryner, one of the best racers in Europe.

Moin Moin Pirates,
here's a report from the capital and a few pics of the Pirate-Spinners in their natural environment. Regina, Günther and Harald took part in an 8h marathon in the B1 sports and recreation center with about 200 other indoor cyclists. The Pirate-Spinners did good, of course not for the whole 8h. It's pretty easy to start sweating. Greetings from Berlin to you guys on the coast,

I am pretty sure that everyone getting this email has had the misfortune of hearing me drone on and on about my training for Ironman Canada (IMC from here on out). Some have unfortunately heard about it more than others, and some have had to deal with a lot more. When the world was in order!
On September 29, 2007, we made our way to the German Championship Revance in Toender, Denmark, with 4 riders. During warm-ups… rain, rain, rain and then, right before the start, it finally stopped and the race was saved.

Moin moin, more news from southern waters.....
On the last 4 days of the league, we had to roll out with our skeleton crew, because of illness and injuries. We decided to drive it home with two week flanks and a good defense, but realized that it wasn't working out after losing the first three games. Yeah, we're not real good on the defensive.

MTB-Relay of 18.6m/30km (3x) in Büchel (Eifel) on October 10th, 2007.
When riding a race in the middle of October, it can get pretty chilly, but we never thought it would be this cold. The thermostat in our car showed 36.5°F/2,5°C. We didn't even want to get out. In addition, the announced relay had been turned into a team competition and we all had to ride at the same time - so no waiting for it to warm up…

The Medoc Marathon is one of the cultural events of the running scene. Being a friend of the wines of Bordeaux, it was clear to me that I had to participate in this run. The area north of Bordeaux, left of Gironde, is slightly molded. It is, overall, sparse and full of vineyards, of course.

Road-Bike-Tandem: an experience...
Every alliance has its weak and its strong elements. In the training collective that Ron and I have formed, I am clearly the weak link - surprise, surprise…. While my pulse rate averages out at 150 (170 beats max.) and I get closer and closer to a complete collapse, Ron bobs along, averaging out at about 109 beats - freezing to death is, also, not an impossibility...

The Miraculous Healing
After having scraped through the short distance at the Ghost-Sauerland Marathon with knee problems, I was off to Erfurt last Sunday, for the 7.swe-pp-Bike Marathon with about 700 starters on three distances. Since, unlike in Grafschaft, I was the only Pink Pirate there, the high recognition-factor set in. I was even addressed by name, when they handed out my starter number. I'm getting embarrassed, considering my recently poor results. But, like I said, you meet some nice people. Most of us chose the middle distance of 36m/58km and 4386.5ft/1337hm.

Wiesbaden Ironman 70.3 - 2007:
My big event for hire! Almost unbeleavable to me: despite a series of injuries and illnesses that didn't want to end, I made it to the starting line. My running training was suboptimal. I was barely able to work on my endurance and hadn't run more than 6.2m/10km in training. In addition, this only being my third triathlon event ever, I was still a total greenhorn. On the other hand, the organization of the event was of the highest level I have seen so far. This was clear, at the latest, by the time we checked in our bikes the day before the race. .

What does my face tell you? I would say, 57 degrees F/14 C and pouring rain in August, the day before the race. Awesome. As I had already noticed in Neuhaus at the Rennsteig, these people seem to have their own mentality, as one can see by this sign ("Our girls are nice. Our beer is good. So come and be merry."). I'm guessing that it has been hung up again and again for a very long time.

The middle distance of 33m/53km and 5265 vertical ft/1300hm was to be conquered. That shouldn't take long. Fat chance… it took a long time: 4 hours. I couldn't find rhythm to save my life. I had to climb, push and crawl way too often. My annoyed comrade-in-arms: "This is a climbing competition for idiots with bikes on their backs".

In order to take a look at the adventures, you, unfortunately, have to register… but see for yourselves.

P.s. The MTV-Party that we won, will probably take place on September 8th in Plettenberg. .

The 15th Erz Mountains-Bike-Marathon in Seiffen
Even though I've lived close by for a while now, I had never ridden in the oldest German bike marathon. Why, I don't know. On Sunday, 1300 starters, a new record, started on three distances (24.8m/40km and 3281 vertical ft/1000hm, 43.5m/70km and 5906 vertical ft/1800hm, 62m/100km and 8530 vertical ft/2600hm) at the same time, in awesome weather. This took place in the toy-town Seiffen, where you can buy all kinds of weird craftsmanship. The day before, I had changed my reservation from the short to the middle distance.

News from Belgium
Of course, our Belgian team riders were in transit too. Here's a short report…

August 2007

Ilmenau had an old school track this year.
It was fast and there were hardly any jumps. A hurricane had made parts of the old descent unmanageable and so they had to come up with something new, fast. Friday, a lot of bikers said that the track was boring and low standard, but it got more difficult the faster you went. Open turns, extremely wavy terrain and brake holes made it hard to keep up speed.

Oh man, what a weekend!
It's now a good 2 weeks ago, but slowly the memories are fading. I guess that is one of the safety mechanisms of the human psyche. When I someday retire - I believe - I will look at the human psyche and the matter of the process of change more closely. But now, back to the actual topic.

Last Sunday, the team PIRATES of Vancouver sponsored by the Hamburg team of the same name created some excitement in the Canadian triathlon scene. Wiesbaden Ironman 70.3 - 2007:
My big event for this year! For me, hard to believe: I had actually had made it to the starting line despite of my continuous series of injuries and illnesses. My running shape was far from optimum. I had been hardly able to build up endurance and hadn't run more than 10km this year. Besides, this was only my third triathlon ever and therefore you might still consider me a complete greenhorn. However, the day before, when we checked-in our bikes it became very obvious that the organization of this event was just about as perfect as can be. I haven't experienced an event of this quality ever before.

Müritz-Triathlon in Waren/Müritz on July 28, 2007
This was my first middle distance of the year. 1.2m/2km swim, 50m/80km bike and 12.4m/20km run. The swim started at noon. I tore myself from the waves after 31 minutes. Since I took longer for 1m/1,6km in Schwerin 2 weeks ago, I guess the swim was a little short.

Continuous Rain in Nordenau...
About an hour before the start, the continuous rain, which was tuned with a few deluge samples, finally stopped. At 3pm, 350 "Fango Fans" were off on the 21.7m/35km and the 34.7m/56km lap, respectively. You really had to pedal to get out of the quagmire at the beginning.

A 0.9m/1,6km swim, 27m/44km on my bike and a 6.2m/10km run were the distances. The swim was 2 laps of 0.45m/0.8km each with a walk ashore between them, great!! After 35 minutes, I got on my bike. This is when I realized just how hilly the countryside of Schwerin really is.

The Lucas Trophy of the company TRW took place this weekend at the Nürburgring for the 18th time. 700 starters from various car companies (Mercedes, Opel, Ford, Porsche, etc.) participated. We were there for the 2nd time and it was like "Green Hell" again. The weather was showing its good side and we could ride to the limit. There were downhill rides that went up to 61mph/98km/H. Ironman 70.3 Florida Rough Draft Article/Race Report
The trip from Cape May, NJ to Orlando, FL for the 2007 Ford Ironman 70.3 Florida set an ominous tone for the race I was about to compete in; wildfires across the northern parts of Florida covered the highways in smoke, almost preventing me from reaching the race site. In a way, this minor difficulty represented a lot of what I had encountered over the previous 6 months in my preparation for the event.

All the signs pointed to a storm.
"Against the Wind" was the battle cry at the triathlon in St. Peter Ording and we don't mean a dry desert wind either, but a real, wet North Sea wind. Since the German Lifeguard Association's boats weren't seaworthy, the swim was cancelled and the triathlon turned into a duathlon.

Total insanity. On Saturday 2800 people started at the 53m/86km race. This probably makes this marathon the race with the most participants on a single distance in all of Germany. On June 17, 2007, the day had finally come. The DPL season began for Fast 'n Deadly. Obviously our goal is to reach the final. By the way, this could also be our chance to advance to the 2nd Federal League. The League is our absolute priority this year. We arrived the day before to check out the field and work out a game plan for the next day. After everyone took their individual notes we discussed the best possible strategy and field formation that evening in the hotel.

My wife and I arrived the evening before the race and as luck would have it, a really great event was taking place at the hotel that evening. Black-Forest-Ultra-Bike-Marathon
On June 17, 2007, the 10th anniversary of the UltraBike took place and since it's kind of my hometown race, I definitely had to start. All morning long, I kept hearing that there were a record number of participants, which I quickly found out for myself, because there were about 1000 bikers signed up just for the 26.7m/43km track. Last Sunday, I participated in a triathlon in Steinbeck. About 100 other athletes joined me for the sprint distance: 0.3m/0.5km swim, 16.7m/27km bike, 3.1m/5km run. The swim took me 11min and I jumped on my bike. Two 8.3m/13,5km laps with a 0.6/1km long ascent with a 12% incline each were the task at hand. Marathon in Saalhausen
The day's weather was a bad omen! First it was dry, but the clouds were merciless and we had a few showers. There were a lot of good and fast bikers gathered at the starting line, which meant I'd have to keep up the tempo! Fibo 2007.... or just take the correct type of nutrition supplements...
from the 19th to the 22nd of April we stood our feet flat on the ground and had our fun at the Fibo (fitness exhibition) in Essen. This exhibition is very interesting, because of the variety of exhibitors and patrons. More in the report...

Beginning of the Federal League in Erlangen
This weekend Ole Panzer and I (Faro Kattner) took part in the first run of the season of the Federal League in Erlangen. A lot of bikers came. More than were expected. There were a lot of unknown faces, like Kenneth Holston the American. The weather was dreamy!

DAY X..........
April 1st 2007 - the date that had popped into my head during the passed 3 months every time that laziness reigned and the inner temptation was to lay on the couch. Suddenly it had come: THE DAY X-Freiburg Marathon 2007.

Duathlon in Braunschweig on April 15th 2007
Nice weather and a great event. The duathlon in Braunschweig had both. 200 hundred starters running 3.4m/5,5km, biking 18.6m/30km and then running 3.4m/5,5km again.

Last weekend, the first two runs of the Suzuki BMX Federal League took place in Erlangen!! I hadn't made up any goals for myself, due to the injury I suffered in the winter. The motto was: ride along and see how you fare!!

Today's realization:
300km (186m) are 100km more than 200km (124m)!! Exactly one week after Thomas, I was permitted to get on the track and smoke the 300-Brevet. As I mentioned in my report of the 200, this time we would be going through the Bergische Land ("hilly country"), so I was ready for the altitude.

What a day?!
Last Thursday, the Sauerland Pirates, represented by Zimbo, Schnuffi and little old me, made it our mission to throw a befitting "farewell" event for our sickly comrade Stedebecker. The reason being the operation on his meniscus (get well soon!), which will incapacitate him for a while.

Mallorca 07, here it comes:
Since I had to limit my plans for this year, due to work, I really didn't have reason to plan a training camp. But, a biking vacation is always a good idea: so I packed up the team bike and, according to old tradition, flew to the island of bowlers and bikers.

Pirates!
Big things are happening on the southern slope of the Teutoburg world! Scouts report that He has arisen again (you know, He, who doesn't know anything and is always whining…). He has heaved himself off of His comfy pillow of billowing self-pity, has retrieved his flying prison from the basement and decided that He wants to cycle again...

Steinfurt-Marathon
Without further ado, I dressed my buddy in a Pirate jersey and signed us up as a Pirate relay team. Each one of us was supposed to absolve a half-marathon. The track was everything but amusing. There were a lot of annoying ascents, headwind and 9.3m/15km of rain.

6 Hour race, in teams of 4. We had 2 teams. The race began at 3pm and ended at 9pm, so they had to ride in the dark for about 4 hours. However, the boys had lit the place well and so they were able to pass a few more competitors. They were very happy with the results:
Team 1: 18th place
Team 2: 39th place

From Norderney to Lanzarote...
On December 25th our trip to the island Norderney in the North Sea began. The running conditions were great along the sea, as we tried to whip ourselves back into shape. Hey Landlubbers!!!
"Grounhog Day" here in the Valle Gran Rey on the Hippie-Island Gomera... It is Sunday, January 7th, 9 o' clock, my alarm clock rings… I get up, gobble some muesli, have another café con leche at Claudia's and ride the first 3280 vertical ft/1000hm in the Zumeria Abraxas up the street of the Valle Gran Rey. Now for either an extremely curvy road or an MTB tour on the fast slopes and blocked trails… .
