What a great experience it was to take part in a real world
championship. And everything worked out! It had been pouring
rain on the days leading up to it, but we had ideal conditions.
Hamburg hasn't seen a big event like this in a while. The
Hamburg City Man was really something special this year: it
is not only the toughest triathlon in the world, but also
the ITU World Championship 2007. After suspenseful competitions
in the past years, the call rang out once again on September
2, 2007: swim from the Binnen- to the Außen-Alster (inner
to outer Lake Alster), cycle along the Elbe, run along the
Alster.
Gathering of the starter group at the "pre-start-area".
.... and then we were off in the 60°F/16°C water of the Binnen-Alster!
Just swim underneath the bridges, around two buoys in the
Außen-Alster and back to the town hall.
Then: change quickly and get on that bike!
The shoes are already mounted on the bike, which spares some
time!
The bike track turned out to be tough: unexpected ascents
and head wind!
... a quick run and I was done!
