Engadin-Radmarathon in Zernez,Schweiz 10.07.2011 !!!

At the 9th of july 2011 early on saturday morning at 70´clock, our car was packed and we were ready to begin our trip to Zernez, in the wonderful Swiss, for the Engadin-bike-marathon.

Everything went good, besides when we reached the Fernpass, their was a traffic jam, but when we finally reached our destination, Susch and our hotel and met a lot of well known faces, everything was fine again. After we checked our rooms, we made our way to get our starting packages in Zernez, after that, we took a small walk and ate lots of noodles and maybe a pizza, than we went back to our hotel, attach the numbers and went to bed. Because at 4o´clock, the night was all over for us, while the stsrting signal was at 7o´clock, for the Engadin-bike-marathon.

First we ate breakfast and than we made our way to Zernez, which is very close to our hotel. Parking the car, fixing the bikes, taking some pictures and directly into the starting boxes. Exact at 7o´clock was the starting signal, while it was warm and we had sunshine. First we had to climb/ride up the Ofenpass, lots of riders made their up, more than 1500 starters.

I waited at the peak for my team-mates, and then it went to the beautiful Italy, right thru a tunnel towards Livigno. By the way, we didn´t ride slow, because we wanted to reach the finish with a time under 8h.

Up  to the Forcol-peak and afterwards up the Bernina-peak and both of them were over 2000m above sea-level. When we wre up thr peak, Gerhard told me: GO. He rode the 100km course, with a good time. Michael who only ride since a year bike-marathons, and only ride up to 3000km a year stayed with me and joined me on the 211km course.

After the Bernina-peak, I pushed the pedals, but sadly I had to suffer with stomach aches, but A Pirate don´t know what pain is, so I rode a high speed, and after a short time, I was alone, until the course seperated in Zernez, I had an average speed of 33km/h, not bad, with three peaks in it. But than, the Flüela and the Albulla-peak came, they weren´t easy, they were long and steep, I was almost down, but I knew shortly it will all be over. When I reached Davos, heavy rain falls came down, and it became colder, for a short time I thought about pulling on my rain jacket, but I had no time for it, everything kept on rolling and that’s fast, I only hoped that the weather would become better when we left the tunnel towards Albulla. And??? My wish was granted, when we left the tunnel, the sun came out again, thank godness, because the long ascent up to the Albulla-peak is really hard, but I knew after it, all things only get downhill and flat to the finish in Zernez. When I reached the peak, it went really fast downhill, and  you should be able to ride a little bit downhill, bacause, one mistake and men or women is…

Than I reached La Punt and the speed became faster again until the finish. And YES, I did it, I finished with a time under 8h, and was welcomed by Gerhard and Michael? He stayed under 9h, and that was a fantastic performance of him, because it was his second big bike-marathon at all. Congratulations.

In fact, it was a wonderful and successful weekend for the Pirates. In the evening we drove home again and everybody was in a good mood and healthy, and that is the most important thing…

Now, whats next on the schedule…???

Hoist the colors and chain mostright...
